Calla Lily's are so provocative, sophisticated and vanguard that famed artist Georgia O'Keeffe made the calla lily her own by painting the flower, enlarging it to heroic proportions and bringing it close. In 1928, O'Keeffe sold six paintings of calla lilies for $25,000, which made headlines in Manhattan.

Paintings and images began appearing in American art soon after the flowers were first shipped here from South Africa in the mid-19th century. Artists included calla lilies as part of a floral mix, or in botanical renderings. The calla lily became part of the visual vocabulary in modern art, and was especially popular with painters and photographers in the 1920s and 1930. Katharine Hepburn mused over the calla lily's appeal in the 1937 film "Stage Door ". Contact Mayesh today for further information.
