Zantedeschia aethiopica
Z. aethiopica Araceae

The only true open cut calla is exclusively at Mayesh. Available year round these huge 4 foot trumpet flared garden callas are not a calla at all and are related to true lilies or to the lily family. The calla is an arum (member of the Araceae family).

The Aracae family is characterized by an inflorescence consisting of a single spadix (a fleshy spike bearing small flowers) and a usually showy and flowerlike bract (modified leaf) called a spathe, which surrounds the spadix. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum ) of Sumatra, which also is grown in a number of botanical gardens, has one of the largest inflorescences of any plant, the spadix reaching a height of 10–15 ft (3–4.6 m) above the ground. The flowers are long-lasting and the dark green lance-shaped foliage makes a perfect backdrop for the graceful blooms. . Z. aethiopica grows 2 to 4 feet tall and bears 6- to 8-inch white flowers that will bloom year round. continued.........
