Helleborus

The vogue for green flowers seems insatiable, and a recent addition to this palette is the Helleborus Argutifolius.(aka Corsican hellebore). The Hellebores have been used in the flower trade in Europe for at least 60 years, principally the Christmas Rose (h. niger) and the Lenten Rose (h. orientalis). These varieties are somewhat diminutive although quite beautiful, featuring respectively pure white and blush pink flowers atop 10”-12” stems. As their names suggest, they flower successively in December, January and March, April.

The Helleborus Argutifolius is an altogether more substantial flower, with stems of 24”-36” in length, featuring sprays of viridian blooms. The sprays repose on sturdy stems that have leathery, spiny-toothed leaves, dark green on the obverse and light green on the reverse. Each flower consists of five jade-green petals, with a prominent cream-colored corona, quite similar to a simple rose, hence it's common nomenclature. Hardy and long lasting, Helleborus Argutifolius is an eye-catching and novel addition to the florists' choice of organic materials.
