Fritillaria
Mayesh Wholesale is currently offering several types of Fritillaria; F. Imperialis or “Crown Imperial”, F. Persica, Acmopetala and on occasion F. Meleagris. They are available only in spring months, so now is a good time to take advantage of these wonderful sculptural elements.
From it's first introduction into Europe, the Crown Imperial captured the hearts and minds of painters and gardeners alike. It has appeared over and over again in Flemish paintings of the 17 th and 18 th centuries, and has been continuously cultivated in Holland and Flanders since it's introduction. There is much lore attached to the flower, and legend has it that while Jesus was walking through the garden of Gethsemane, all the flowers bowed their heads in honor except one, the Crown Imperial. Thereafter, the plant has kept its blooms bowed in shame and tears line the bracts within the flower to this day. Look inside and you can see them!
Whether or not this is true, it is easy to see why this striking flower that originated in the Middle East, has garnered so much attention. Large, bold and brassy; it features rigid upright black 30"stems crowned by a whorl of large, pendant bell-shaped 2" flowers surmounted with a crop of rich green leaves. The flowers are available in a smoldering orange, and a brilliant yellow.
