The orchid family abounds with plants, having more than 750 genera and at least 20,000 native species. Wild orchids grow throughout most parts of the world. Some botanists believe the birthplace of orchids to be in Thailand 100 million years ago, and their success as plants is clearly evident, since they have adapted to a wide range of climates. Orchids are prized for their flowers that are specialized, sometimes bizarre and often have intricate parts. They are often brightly colored and shaped to attract specific insects that will pollinate them.
